Weight of War raises $19,000

On 6 December, Cronulla was on of 4 stages around the country, for the Weight of War Run. Despite a punishing 37 degree heatwave in Cronulla, more than 60 participants turned up, strapped on a 10kg weight vest, pulled on their budgy smugglers, and pushed themselves well beyond comfort for a cause greater than themselves.

Participants tackled distances of 1, 5, 10 and an extraordinary 21 kilometres, with ages ranging from just 11 years old through to an inspiring 86. It was a day where strength met vulnerability, where physical challenge became a symbol of shared burden, and where community stood shoulder to shoulder in the heat.

The Cronulla event formed part of a national movement, with Weight of War runs taking place simultaneously across the country, including Perth and Brisbane. While Karratha was forced to make a late cancellation due to safety concerns, the team there remained a key part of the broader Weight of War story and spirit, reinforcing that this movement is bigger than any one event or location.

The Cronulla run was proudly supported by the Zero79 Foundation and Southern Districts Rugby Club, strengthening the connection between service, sport and community. The local Priceline Woolooware Bay Central came along, to make sure that participants.

Across all Weight of War venues, an incredible $19,000 was raised. The Cronulla contingent proudly got behind Jason and Manic leading the charge locally raising $2,000. A further $11,050 was raised by the Zero79 Foundation team, highlighting the scale of impact when communities unite behind a shared purpose.

These critical funds will now go towards programs that give veterans the tools they need to thrive after service, including sponsoring places on the Survive to Thrive Nation (STTN) Program.

Sincere thanks to the sponsors who backed the cause so strongly, plus the on-the-ground support for keeping momentum, morale and organisation high throughout the day.

To everyone who ran, volunteered, donated, or simply showed up to support, this event belongs to you as much as it does to the organisers. Sharing the challenge, embracing the discomfort, and then coming together afterwards to share a well-earned beer is what makes Weight of War such a meaningful experience.
