Surf Boats Form Powerful Tribute at Cronulla ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Just offshore at this year’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service, 11 surf boats formed a line on the water, creating one of the most recognisable moments of the morning.

Crews came together from across the Shire, with two boats from Cronulla, five from North Cronulla, two from Elouera and two from Wanda. Each boat was fully crewed, with volunteers giving their time to be part of something that holds real meaning for the community.

There’s a lot that goes into it. The day before, crews worked together to create a plan and move boats into position and set up string lines offshore to guide the formation. On the morning, they were back on the water early, supported by the IRB from Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, working to get each boat into place safely.

Out on the water, it’s not easy. Crews are managing swell, current and wind, all while holding their position in the dark. It takes focus, teamwork and experience. From the shoreline it looks calm, but there’s a fair bit going on behind the scenes to keep everything steady.

The surf boats have become an important part of the service. For a coastal community, they reflect a connection to the story of Gallipoli, where many landed from small boats under difficult conditions. It’s a simple but powerful way to acknowledge that history.

There’s also a strong link between surf clubs and RSLs. Both are built around service, mateship and showing up for the community. ANZAC Day is one of those times where that connection is clear.

From setting up the day before to being out on the water at dawn, the crews put in a lot to be part of the service. It doesn’t go unnoticed, and it adds something special to the morning.

Cronulla RSL & Cronulla Sub-Branch thanks all clubs and crews involved.

Surf Boats / Crews Photos
A special perspective from the water. Our local surf boat crews captured these moments as they came together offshore, honouring the spirit of mateship and remembrance that defines ANZAC Day. Thank you to all crews who shared their view of this powerful tribute.

Drone Footage / Community from Above

A powerful reminder of community at its best. Thank you to Michael Sutton, who captured this incredible aerial view of Cronulla & the surf boats as thousands gathered to honour and remember. From above, the scale of respect and unity is truly something to behold.
