Cronulla Community Comes Together for a Moving ANZAC Day Dawn Service

In the early hours of ANZAC Day, the Cronulla community gathered at Cronulla Park, standing together in quiet reflection. As the sky slowly lightened, thousands came to honour and remember those who have served.

The service began with a March through Cronulla Park, followed by readings, prayers and reflections led by the Cronulla RSL Sub-Branch and members of the community. Students from Woolooware High School and St Aloysius College played an important role, bringing a strong sense of connection across generations, while the choir and piper added a quiet, moving presence.

Wreath laying was a significant part of the service, with individual, schools and organisations stepping forward to pay their respects. Each tribute was a simple but powerful reminder of those remembered, and the shared gratitude felt across the crowd.

As the sun rose over the water, surf lifesaving crews from Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla and Cronulla formed offshore in a tribute unique to our coastline. Together with the Last Post and the minute’s silence, it was a moment that brought everything to a standstill.

A highlight of the service was the ANZAC Address delivered by Ben Haime, who spoke about service, sacrifice and the responsibility to carry these stories forward. His words resonated across the crowd, reinforcing why gatherings like this continue to matter.

The ANZAC Address and the recitation of the Ode, delivered in both Māori and English, reflected the enduring bond between Australia and New Zealand. The service concluded with the national anthems, marking the close of a ceremony that holds deep meaning for the local community.

A special thank you to Sutherland Shire SES, Jen, Kate and Sheryl from Cronulla RSL Hockey Club, Clint from Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club, and the many volunteers who gave their time to support the Dawn Service. Thank you also to Geoff, Robyn, Brett and Em from Shire Events Live. Your work behind the scenes plays a vital role in bringing the day together for the community, and it is genuinely appreciated.

Cronulla RSL is proud to support this important commemoration and thanks everyone who attended to pay their respects.

Lest We Forget.
