Helping Make a New Home Happen for Sydney's Animals

A new home is taking shape in Kurnell for one of Sydney's most important animal welfare organisations, Sydney Dogs & Cats Home.

For almost 80 years, Sydney Dogs & Cats Home has provided shelter, veterinary care and a second chance for lost, abandoned and neglected animals across Sydney. After being forced to leave their long-term home in Carlton due to redevelopment, the organisation has been operating from temporary facilities while working towards the construction of a new purpose-built shelter in Kurnell.

The new facility will allow Sydney Dogs & Cats Home to more than double its current capacity, supporting over 3,000 animals each year and helping more pets find loving homes, reunite with their families and receive the care they need.

As part of the organisation's Make Home Happen appeal, supporters can contribute through a range of housewarming gifts that help equip the new shelter with essential items needed for daily operations. From kennels and cat pods to practical resources that keep the facility running smoothly, every contribution helps create a safe and welcoming environment for animals waiting for their next chapter.

Cronulla RSL recently supported the appeal through the Paws of Fame program, dedicating a tribute plaque to Animals Impacted by War. The plaque will form part of the new shelter while helping fund essential resources and care for animals in need. It serves as a reminder of the important role animals have played alongside military personnel throughout history, and honours those affected by conflict around the world.

While significant progress has already been made, Sydney Dogs & Cats Home is continuing to raise funds to complete the $21.6 million project. Once opened, the shelter will expand animal welfare services across Sydney, increase adoption opportunities and support thousands of animals and families each year.

With construction progressing in our local area, the new Kurnell shelter represents an exciting step forward for animal welfare in Sydney and a future where even more animals can receive the care, safety and support they deserve.
