Celebrating 17 Years of Community Spirit at the Woolooware High School Swim Meet

Cronulla RSL Swimming Club was delighted to once again host students and teachers from Woolooware High School for their annual swimming meet, followed by a well earned BBQ and shared lunch. Now in its 17th year, this much loved event continues to be a highlight on our community calendar, bringing together sport, camaraderie and plenty of good food.

The feature event of the day was the 10 a side relay for the Gary Schmalfeldt Memorial Trophy, where teams aim to finish closest to their nominated time. Congratulations to the Woolooware High School team, who were worthy winners in a very tight and entertaining contest.

The success of this day is always driven by the enthusiasm and spirit shown by the students and their teachers, who fully embrace what the event represents. Adding to the celebrations, students generously brought along a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and sweets, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

It was particularly special to welcome Anne Schmalfeldt, who presented the winning trophy and shared the history behind the memorial event. Anne was amazed and delighted to see how strongly the day continues to thrive after so many years.

A heartfelt thank you to Woolooware High School, our dedicated Swimming Club members, and everyone who helped the day run so smoothly. Special thanks also to our ever reliable chef, Eric Wood, who once again delivered superb sausages from the BBQ and kept everyone well fed.

The Gary Schmalfeldt Memorial Trophy

The Gary Schmalfeldt Memorial Trophy is awarded annually by the Cronulla RSL Swimming Club, contested in a fun 10-a-side relay against Woolooware High School, with the winner determined by who is closest to their nominated time, a challenge held at Gunnamatta Bay each year.

Gary Schmalfeldt, along with Don Saunders, was instrumental in starting this tradition when he was a teacher at the school and it is now one of the club’s most popular carnivals with great participation.

This trophy celebrates a significant figure in the club, with the annual event fostering camaraderie between the RSL swimmers and the local high school.
