Cronulla RSL’s Commitment to Sustainability: Celebrating World Environment Day with Real Impact

We’re proud to play our part in building a greener future — not just today, but every day. Sustainability is woven into our operations and culture, guiding the decisions we make to reduce our environmental impact and promote responsible practices across all areas of the Club. From energy use to waste management and community engagement, we are committed to continuous improvement and innovation to protect the planet for future generations.

Here’s how we’re actively reducing our footprint:

Sustainable Energy Solutions

Cronulla RSL has taken significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint through the installation of four independent solar panel systems. These solar panels generate renewable energy to power various aspects of the Club’s operations, reducing dependence on traditional electricity sources. This not only lowers the Club’s overall environmental impact but also leads to substantial cost savings, allowing resources to be redirected towards other sustainability initiatives.

Waste Reduction Through Advanced Technology

To tackle waste management efficiently, Cronulla RSL has implemented state-of-the-art waste reduction systems, including a glass crusher and a cardboard compactor. These machines significantly reduce the volume of waste requiring transportation. For example, the glass crusher transforms three truckloads of glass bottles into fine dust, allowing the same volume to be transported in just one truck. This reduction in transportation requirements directly lowers CO2 emissions by minimising the number of vehicles and trips needed to transport waste to processing facilities.

Food Waste Management – The ORCA System

One of the most innovative sustainability initiatives at Cronulla RSL is the use of the ORCA food waste digesting machine. This cutting-edge system employs naturally occurring microorganisms in an oxygenated environment to break down food waste into a liquid effluent. The effluent is then processed by wastewater treatment facilities, preventing organic waste from ending up in landfill where it would generate methane – a potent greenhouse gas.

In 2024 alone, the ORCA machine processed over 13 tonnes of food waste, leading to a reduction of 6.6 tonnes in CO2 emissions. To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to driving 27,005.9 kilometres or burning 3,786.3 litres of petrol. By significantly lowering food waste emissions, Cronulla RSL is setting a benchmark for sustainable waste management in the hospitality industry.

Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Cronulla RSL is committed to phasing out single-use plastics in favour of environmentally friendly alternatives. The Club has replaced plastic bin liners, drinking cups and straws with biodegradable and industrially compostable options. These changes drastically cut down on non-degradable waste, ensuring that less plastic ends up in landfill or the ocean. This shift aligns with global efforts to reduce plastic pollution and promotes a more sustainable operational model.

Community Recycling Initiatives

Beyond internal sustainability practices, Cronulla RSL actively engages in community-driven recycling programs. The Club utilises the Purple Bin initiative during large events, ensuring that cans and bottles are collected and properly recycled rather than discarded as general waste. By leveraging this program, the Club extends its sustainability efforts beyond its own operations and fosters a culture of responsible waste management within the community.

Recycle Smart Bin in the Office

To further support sustainability efforts, Cronulla RSL has introduced a Recycle Smart Bin in the office, providing a hassle-free way to recycle tricky items. The bin allows for the collection of soft plastics, E-waste, small appliances, textiles, batteries, stationary supplies.

By making recycling convenient and accessible, the Club continues to encourage staff and members to participate in sustainable practices and reduce landfill waste..

Printer Toner Recycling

As part of its commitment to responsible waste management, Cronulla RSL ensures that all used printer toner cartridges are recycled through a specialised Fuji Xerox collection program. Instead of disposing of empty cartridges in general waste, the Club partners with recycling services that collect and process toner cartridges, preventing them from ending up in landfill. These cartridges are broken down into reusable components, including plastics and metals, which are then repurposed for manufacturing new products. This initiative reduces waste, conserves valuable resources, and minimises the environmental impact of printing operations within the Club.

Secure Paper Shredding and Recycling

Cronulla RSL also prioritises secure document disposal and paper recycling. The Club partners with National Shred to securely shred paper and documents, ensuring that sensitive information is disposed of safely. The shredded paper is then sent for recycling, reducing paper waste and contributing to a circular economy. By implementing this service, the Club not only enhances security but also reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability.5

Co – Mingle Service

Through our partnership with REMONDIS and the dedication of Cronulla RSL staff, 6,300 litres of recyclable waste have been successfully diverted from landfill through our co-mingled recycling service. This system allows multiple recyclable materials to be collected in a single bin, making it an efficient and effective way to manage waste. By taking the time to correctly separate recyclables, our staff are actively contributing to a more sustainable future—demonstrating that simple, everyday actions can have a meaningful environmental impact.

Cronulla RSL takes a practical approach to environmental sustainability through renewable energy, waste reduction, technology, and community programs. By focusing on these areas, the Club addresses the growing expectations of its members while supporting a more sustainable future. Ongoing assessment and improvements help Cronulla RSL maintain responsible business practices and serve as a positive example for others.

One of the ways Cronulla RESL reduce their carbon footprint, is through the installation of four independent solar panel systems. These solar panels generate renewable energy to power various aspects of the Club’s operations, reducing dependence on traditional electricity sources.
