Cronulla Sub-Branch Hosts Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony

On Vietnam Veterans Day 2025, the Cronulla Sub-Branch honoured those who served during the Vietnam War with a moving commemoration. Due to inclement weather, the ceremony was relocated from Monro Park to the Cronulla RSL, ensuring the community could still come together to reflect and pay tribute.

The event was hosted by the Cronulla Sub-Branch executive and was attended by several distinguished guests, including The Hon. Mark Speakman, The Hon. Simon Kennedy, Deputy Mayor Laura Cowell, , Cronulla RSL CEO Nathan Whiteside, and Cronulla RSL Director Peter Kerr. The ceremony also welcomed members of the Engadine Sub-Branch, who chose not to hold their own service this year but instead joined Cronulla in a strong display of unity. This collaboration highlighted the great relationship between the two organisations and their shared commitment to supporting veterans.

One touching moment of the service was the reading of a heartfelt poem by Paul Zaat. Paul, a Vietnam veteran who served with the 8th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR), brought deep emotion and authenticity to the ceremony. 8RAR was deployed to Vietnam in 1969, where they undertook critical operations in Phuoc Tuy Province, and veterans like Paul carry forward the memory of those who served alongside them.

Vietnam Veterans Day holds special significance in Australia. Observed on 18 August, it marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966, one of the most well-known engagements of the war involving Australian forces. Each year, this day offers an opportunity to remember the nearly 60,000 Australians who served during the Vietnam War, the more than 500 who lost their lives, and the many who continue to carry the physical and emotional scars of their service.

In 2025, we mark nearly 60 years since the Battle of Long Tan and continue to honour the service and sacrifice of all who served in Vietnam. The Cronulla Sub-Branch's ceremony was a reminder of the enduring gratitude owed to these veterans and the importance of ensuring their stories and experiences are never forgotten.

This year’s service was proudly funded through ClubGRANTS Category 1 funding, supporting the ongoing efforts to honour veterans and preserve their legacy.
