Honouring Service: Cronulla RSL Launches the Service Recognition Membership Card
In keeping with its proud tradition of supporting the veteran community, Cronulla RSL is proud to introduce the Service Recognition Membership Card — a heartfelt initiative that acknowledges the courage, sacrifice, and continued service of our current and ex-serving Defence Force members.
This special card is more than just a membership — it’s a symbol of deep respect and gratitude. Members who have served our nation will now carry a card marked by a distinctive red poppy in the top right corner, signifying their dedication and sacrifice.
The Sutherland Shire Local Area is home to one of the highest concentrations of current and ex-serving personnel in the country, largely due to the presence of military facilities such as Holsworthy Barracks*. The most recent Census was the first to include a question on military service, and revealed 4,574 live in the area.
“As a Service Recognition Member, you are not just a guest — you are family,” says Nathan Whiteside, CEO of Cronulla RSL. “Every time you scan your card across our venue, our team will acknowledge your service with respect and gratitude. This is your home.”
This initiative is the latest step in Cronulla RSL’s long and meaningful journey. Established in 1953 on the Whitelaw land in Gerrale Street, our Club began with just over 500 members and a strong sense of purpose. What began as a safe and social haven for veterans has now grown to a vibrant community hub with over 30,000 members — and a legacy that still beats with the same heart.
“RSLs like ours were built to bring veterans and their families together — a place to relax, share stories, and feel connected,” says Nathan Whiteside, CEO of Cronulla RSL. ““The Service Recognition Membership Card is our way of continuing that legacy — a small but meaningful way to show our respect every time a veteran walks through our doors.”
From humble beginnings with activities like fishing, cricket, and billiards, to today’s modern beachfront venue offering mouth-watering cuisine, superb cocktails and world-class service, Cronulla RSL has continued to expand its impact — while remaining rooted in honour, remembrance, and community.
As proud supporters of the veteran community, Cronulla RSL has also partnered with likeminded organisations that may be of interest to veterans and their families. These groups offer meaningful support, connection, and services that warmly welcome those who have served. They play an important role in honouring service, fostering camaraderie, and providing pathways to wellbeing and community engagement.
The introduction of the Service Recognition Membership Card reinforces our commitment to veterans, while extending a public symbol of appreciation to all who have worn the uniform.
Stay tuned — exclusive offers and recognition days for Service Recognition Members will be announced throughout the year.
