Remembering Aslan: A Life of Service, Courage and Love
Cronulla RSL is deeply saddened by the passing of Aslan, our much-loved honorary four-legged member and retired Combat Assault Dog, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, following a period of illness.
Aslan lived an extraordinary life defined by service, courage and devotion. His passing is a significant loss for his family, his former handlers and the wider Defence community who knew and admired him.
Born in the Netherlands, Aslan was recruited by the Australian Defence Force from a Military Working Dog kennel before going on to serve for six years as a Combat Assault Dog with the 2nd Commando Regiment, Special Operations Command Australia.
During his career, Aslan deployed to the United States, where he played an integral role in supporting Australian training teams and assisting multiple coalition forces. He also contributed to the Tactical Assault Group for three years, demonstrating the exceptional courage, discipline and dedication required of a Military Working Dog operating alongside Australia's elite personnel.
His service was a testament to the extraordinary contribution these highly trained dogs make to Australia's Defence capability, often working in demanding and dangerous environments alongside their human counterparts.
Following his operational career, Aslan faced another formidable challenge when he was diagnosed with cancer. After surviving the disease, he entered retirement with a renewed purpose, helping raise awareness of the serious impact cancer can have on dogs and advocating for the health, wellbeing and longevity of retired Military Working Dogs and dogs more broadly.
His story highlighted that the service of a Military Working Dog does not end when they retire. These remarkable animals carry the physical and emotional legacy of their working lives into retirement, deserving the same compassion, care and recognition they gave so much to earn.
In 2025, Cronulla RSL proudly recognised the extraordinary service of retired Combat Assault Dogs Manic and Aslan when they received the inaugural Australian Animal Distinguished Service Award at the Australian War Memorial on the National Day for War Animals, Monday 24 February.
The recognition celebrated their exceptional service and the important place Military Working Dogs hold in Australia's military history.
Aslan's passing follows the loss of his fellow honorary member, Manic, earlier this year. Both dogs leave behind remarkable legacies of service and a community that will continue to honour their contributions.
Cronulla RSL remains committed to supporting Military Working Dogs and the people who stand beside them. Through the recently developd ‘Paws of Honour Program’, delivered in collaboration with advocay program ‘Manic's Mission’, led by handler Jason, we will continue working to recognise the service of retired Military Working Dogs and support their handlers and families where possible.
The program reflects our belief that these dogs deserve recognition, dignity and care beyond their operational years. Their service matters, their welfare matters, and the bond they share with their handlers deserves to be acknowledged and supported.
To Aslan's family, former handlers and everyone who loved him, we extend our deepest condolences. We hope you find comfort in the knowledge that his service, courage and contribution will not be forgotten.
Aslan gave so much throughout his life, both in uniform and in retirement. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the awareness he helped create and the ongoing commitment to those Military Working Dogs who follow in his pawprints.
Rest peacefully, Aslan. Thank you for your service.
