Cronulla RSL Swimming Club Shines at the 90th Annual AIF Carnival
The 90th Annual AIF Carnival in Nelson Bay has wrapped up after a fantastic weekend of swimming, camaraderie and competition, with the Cronulla RSL Swimming Club once again making its mark against strong clubs from across the region.
Our swimmers delivered outstanding performances across a range of championship events, demonstrating both determination and sportsmanship in the pool. John Butterfield claimed first place in the Over 85 25m Freestyle, while Gordon Williams secured second in the 80–84 25m Freestyle and Judy Walshe took third place in the 75–79 25m Freestyle. Graham Mundy also brought home gold in the 75–79 50m Freestyle, while Phil Widders placed second in the 70–74 50m Freestyle. Ron Massaar had an exceptional meet, finishing first in both the 65–69 50m Freestyle and the Over 60 50m Backstroke, as well as taking second place in the Over 60 50m Breaststroke. Peter Green added to the medal tally with a third-place finish in the 65–69 50m Freestyle. Brian Havilah also competed strongly in the Over 90 25m Freestyle event.
The carnival also featured the always exciting Nominated Time Events, where four Cronulla RSL swimmers qualified for the 25m final: Joan Harper, Bernard Daly, Al Barry and Dave Dopson. With swimmers hitting their nominated times to within one hundredth of a second, the competition was incredibly tight. While Al Barry and Dave Dopson were ultimately balloted out of the eight-lane final, both were still recognised as finalists during the presentation.
A standout achievement for the club was finishing third in the overall Male Championship Point Score. This result is particularly impressive given the team had only one swimmer competing in the under-57 age group and no representation in several events, highlighting the strength, experience and determination of the Cronulla RSL team.
Behind every successful carnival is a team of dedicated volunteers, and we extend our sincere thanks to the many club members who assisted throughout the weekend. From setting up marquees and timekeeping, to judging events, selling raffle tickets and cheering from the sidelines, their support helped make the event another memorable success for the club.
Cronulla RSL congratulates all swimmers who represented the club with pride and looks forward to seeing the team back in the pool for future competitions.
